How to Care for your Wigs and Weaves with Natural Products

Do you sometimes feel that your wig is in desperately need of a hair treatment but you don’t know what to use? Maybe you even spend hours looking for recommendations online or searching on the pharmacy shelves but the products that you think can work are just too expensive? Listen, you are not alone. There are so many different products out there with similar claims shouting at you that is very easy to feel confused and overwhelmed.

The good news is that there are plenty of natural products and ingredients that you can use to care for your wigs and give them a DIY rejuvenation program – the best part is that I am sure you have the majority of them at your house. Here at LolaSilk we made a compilation of the best ingredients plus easy-to-make recipes for you to try at home that will help to nourish, moisturize and make the hair of your wigs and weaves healthy again. We share the best tips on how to care for your wigs and weaves with natural products.

    • Olive oil / Coconut oil
    Coconut and olive oil

These two oils are the most famous ones when it comes to treatment for dry hair. There are also other options that you could use in case you prefer and those are almond oil, castor oil, jojoba oil and corn oil.

These types of oils are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that are really important for repairing damaged hair.

One of the easiest ways of using these oils is by warming them up to a temperature that you can comfortably apply it on your hair using your hands and fingers. If the temperature is too high it might burn your hands and damage even more your hair strands.

After gently massaging the oil throughout the extension of your hair, wrap-it with a warm towel and leave it on for approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

    • Apple cider vinager
    Apple cider vinager

Apple cider vinager is great for its deep cleaning properties by removing all residues left behind by other products. Because of its acidity it is said that it helps to regulate the hair PH which in return helps to close down open cuticles, therefore reducing frizz.

A good way of using it is by mixing together 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar with ¼ cup of warm water. Apply on the entire length of your wig or weaves and leave it on for approximately 3 to 5 minutes. If you have some unused mixture left you can store it until your next treatment session.

    • Eggs
eggs or mayonnaise for hair treatment

Eggs contem lots of protein, saturated fat and vitamins that help to fortify the hair strands giving back its shine and reducing frizz.

If you can’t get over the idea of applying eggs directly on your wigs and weaves, you can try to use mayonnaise instead, which is made using eggs but doesn’t have a strong smell that some of you might reject.

All you have to do is to apply a generous amount of mayonnaise on your hair, cover it with plastic or a shower cap and leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes.

    • Avocado
    Avocado for hair treatment

Apart from being delicious, avocados are packed with vitamins and  moisturizing properties, which are great ingredients to fight dry and frizzy hair. One suggestion of how to apply it to your hair would be to smash a ripe small avocado and mix it with 3 table spoons of coconut oil (or any other oil of you preference that were listed above) to form a paste that you can easily apply on your hair. After application, cover your wig with a plastic and leave this mask on for about 25 to 30 minutes.

After you pick the recipe that you would like to test, apply it on your hair and leave it on for the recommended amount of time. Then it is time to wash it off and this step is critically important to make sure you preserve all the hard work you put behind with the treatments listed above. If you are unsure of how to properly wash your wigs or weaves, make sure to read our hair care section on LolaSilk website.

You might want to test more than one treatment mentioned here just so you know which one of them gives you the best outcome. You can also mix and match the ingredients listed above to build your own recipe and test different options.

Results will vary depending on the type of hair, texture and level of damage of your wig.

Try to apply a hair treatment once every other week so you can keep your hair looking and feeling smooth, less prone to breakage and with little frizz. It is much easier to care for your wigs and weaves continuously versus having to invest money and time trying to restore them when the damage is already too evident. A little bit every week will guarantee you a healthier and glamorous hair for longer.
