How to know when to replace a wig

We get it – you have a special connection to your lovely wig. It has helped you get ready and achieve a full-on glam look in a few minutes.

It has helped you feel confident and strong when you’ve maybe felt a bit down. Yet, it is starting to look a little rough around the edges and it has lost some of its former glory.

There are quite a few tell-tale signs that you might need to replace your wig soon. Knowing when to replace your wig is important.

Ways to know when it is finally time replace your wig

    It’s lost its shine

Just like natural hair, the amount of shine in it can tell a lot about the hair’s health. When your locks are shining and glowing it is a good indication that your hair is healthy and in tiptop condition. However, when your hair starts getting dull and mat, it could be because the condition of your hair is deteriorating.

The same goes for wigs. When your wig loses its shine and it becomes lifeless, it is a sign that you should be thinking about replacing it with a new wig. You do have the option to apply serums and conditioners to your wigs, but when you notice that you have to do this too frequently to bring back the shine, and your wig looks lifeless soon after the application, it is time to replace it.

The loss of that vibrant colour in your wig is also a sign that you need to purchase a new one. Another way to see if your wig is past its expiry date, is when it gets dry and frizzy, which leads to the wig becoming easily tangled.

You are struggling to style your wig

A major reason why people opt to wear wigs is for the styling benefit that comes along with it. A person usually looks at the style of a wig before they purchase it. The cut, length and style of the wig is determined by the shape of your face. Therefore, it is important for any wig to maintain the style that you bought it in.

While some synthetic wigs are meant to be kept in the style you originally purchased it in, Lola Silk offers heat-resistant synthetic wigs that can flat ironed, blow dried and curled. If your synthetic wig isn’t holding style well, it may be time to upgrade to a better quality synthetic wig from Lola Silk.

Human hair wigs do not necessarily come in a specific style, as you have the freedom to choose it to your liking. When you realise that you struggle to style it, or that it takes forever to put some curls into it, you have to replace it.

You notice split ends and damaged hair

Just like biological hair, the ends of hair strands can get damaged and dry over time, especially when you regularly use heat to style your hair. The more you wear your wig, the bigger the chances get for developing split and frayed ends.

You can fix the problem by trimming the ends, steaming and applying conditioning treatments, but it will only be a matter of time before you will have to replace your wig. The fraying might spread to other parts of the wig closer to the roots. If this happens, there is nothing you can do further.

The wig cap is stretched out

A wig should fit securely and comfortably on your head. You might notice that your wig cap is becoming loose and stretched out. This leads to the wig not fitting securely on your hea and it might fall of. This means it is time for that wig to go.

Your wig has lost some hair and its volume

It is normal for your wig to lose some of its strands when combing and washing your piece, but as soon as it starts losing a lot of hair, you need to get a new wig. When you notice your wig becoming thinner or shorter, it means it is losing too many strands. Professionals might be able to replace a few threads on your wig, but if you are losing huge amounts of strands, it is irreparable and time for a new one.

You get tired of wearing your wig

You have the option to style your wig in every different way, but when you get tired of wearing it, it might be time to invest in a new head of locks.
